As of lately a lot of Generex investors have been focusing on their lead product: Oral-Lyn, a buccal insulin delivery system for diabetics. But this morning the company announced that they would be issuing a 3 part white paper on their other products that they have in the pipeline. With a quick glance at their website and you will see various products relating to glucose control, but none of the products are geared towards development. That’s because the company houses the cancer drugs under a subsidiary company called Antigen Express (website here). Antigen Express was bought by Generex awhile back and continued their cancer product development. Some of which looks very promising. So what is Antigen Express’ lead product?
The Lead product
Antigen Express focuses on immunotherapy biotechnology (immunotherapy simply means that the drugs enhance or suppress a persons immune system responses). The company’s lead product is called Ii-key Hybrid Vaccine or AE37, and is being tested in breast cancer patients to prevent relapse. In a nutshell the vaccine causes the person’s immune system to recognize the breast cancer cell as a foreign invader and attack it. The technology works by taking a small piece of protein that is expressed in breast cancer cells and then modifying it to use in an immunotherapeutic vaccine. Cancer immunotherapy relies on the technique of training a person’s body to destroy cancer cells. You see normally in cancer patients, the body’s immune system fails due to a series of tricks that the cancer cells use to evade immune system detection.
Cancer vaccines are a relatively new development in immunotherapy, in contrast to other cancer fighting methods, cancer vaccines are not associated with some of the more serious side effects that you would see with normal chemotherapy or radiotherapy regimes. Instead, cancer vaccines and the body’ immune system are able to build their own antigen-specific anti-tumor responses which are less toxic to patients bodies. A majority of cancer vaccines are response medicines rather than preventative ones, this simply means that cancer patients usually undergo surgery to remove a tumor and the vaccination is then added into to the treatment to clear the rest of the residual cancer out of the body, which helps to prevent cancer relapses. cont’d on next page
