Cell Therapeutics said this morning that the EMEA has validated their Pediatric Investigation Plan for their lead product Pixantrone in NHL patients. Pediatric Investigation Plans (PIPs) were made by the European Commission to help ensure that medicines for children are included in drug development programs, rather than a simple bolt-on process to adult studies. The company said this morning that they have put together a Steering Committee and other partners for the Phase III trial of the drug. This morning Cell Therapeutics said that they were able to raise another $4.06 million in capital in a preferred stock offering. The preferred stock will be convertible into 11.6 million shares of common stock. This morning Curis announced that they will receive a $3 million milestone payment from Debiopharm for achieving the treatment of 5 patients with the drug Debio 932, also known as CUDC-305. CUDC-305 is being developed as a heat shock protein 90, or Hsp90, inhibitor. Hsp90 is a molecular chaperone protein that plays a role in cell signaling and it is believed that Hsp90 plays a significant role in the proliferation of cancer cells. Today Cell Therapeutics announced that they finally paid back their $39.3 million in convertible debt that was hanging over the company’s head. The move is a net positive for the company as several news outlets had been reporting prior to the payment that the company faced severe short-term funding issues.
